There is a massive amount of investment going on in the Schladming Ski Area - 20 Million Euros in the last year. A new 8 seater chairlift with heated seats has been added to the Planai, the first in Steiermark, the Planai Atomic Superpark has been rebuilt, on the Reiteralm there will be 4 new Black Runs for experienced skiers plus 45 new snow cannons making 240 altogether on that mountain alone. there will also be a new funpark at the gondola station. At Hauser Kaibling there will also be a new 4 seater chair lift taking skiers up to the Gripfel which is the highest peak.
There are over 40 mountain restaurants throughout the Schaldming area mainly built in traditional style serving hearty mountain fare at very reasonable prices.
There is a local lift just 100m away which has a nice sunny blue run ( approx 800 meters long) which is excellent for beginners, sledging or just gaining confidence before hitting the mountain. Private lessons can be booked here
Ramsau itself has 40km of piste, including the Dachstein Glacier, the main runs being at the Rittisberg, some excellent skiing can be had here. It's a real family resort and the pistes are well groomed and quiet with mostly locals and rarely any lift queues at all. There are great sunny pistes in Ramsau for beginners and improving intermediates, also some great off piste through trees.
There are several excellent, English speaking, ski schools in the village which all have great fun areas with safe ski runs and children's parks. Lessons can be booked for either half or full days, with courses of from 1 - 5 days. Lunch time supervision is also available for children. Reasonably priced Private Lessons are also available, either one to one or as a private group lesson. Group discounts are also offered on Ski Hire.
Dachstein Glacier
The skiing here is excellent - between 2200m and 2800m and open almost all year.
This area guarantees that there is always snow here. There is some great off pitse and ski touring possible here and it is possible to ski down from the Galcier to the base station - stuitable for very experienced skiers only and preferably with a guide!
From the glacier base station there is a very picturesque trail from the cable car base station right down to Ramsau village passing the Rittisburg - 7.5km.
The Glacier is also the home of the Atomic Super Park - snow boarding park which is rebuilt every year in the autumn and is host to several snow boarding events through the season.
